Tire History

While waiting an hour or so today for my "oil change" I learned quite a bit about tires.
Well first, I'll explain that my 'oil change' turned into 'new brakes' and 'transmission' :(
But I learned a lot of useful information. I wasn't having a conversation with anyone it was more me glancing at my book of the week, "Confessions of a Shopaholic," while eavesdropping on a salesman speaking with a potential customer.

Anyways...
* First I learned that the Assurance TripleTred Tires are the best all season tires for cars.
* Next I learned that the treds all have different purposes. I know I know, you already know all of this, but I didn't. I had no idea what axle they needed to repair and why it had anything to do with 'servicing my transmission.' In fact I had to hand the phone from my dad to the mechanic to explain the diagnosis.
-So the outside tread is made for dry roads and helps when you turn corners and fancy things like that.
-The next tread helps direct water (rain) out from underneath the tire by the 'aquachutes' so the tire can have more contact with the road enabling you to survive in Seattle.
-The last tread helps with snow and ice because it has an 'interlocking ribs to enhance traction.'
Are you still awake? So that wasn't that exciting but this is.........

* Then I learned what tires are made out of!!!
-The icy tread, the inside one, is made up of volcanic ash and fiberglass making it a softer rubber.
- The outside dry tread has carbon fiber on the outside to make it stiff and then Kevlar lined inside to reduce road noise. (in case you don't know Kevlar is a fiber that is FIVE times stronger than steel.)

Well I guess that was all today class. I hope you took notes because there is a quiz the next time you get a flat...Lets hope that doesn't happen to anyone!!!!!

This is like Powder Puff Mechanics! Don't worry I just learned that when I took my new car in for its 20,000 mile check up that I supposed to have a 12,000 mile check up or something. Well nobody called and told me that!
