Octopus Mating

I know...such a weird title to a blog post. I HAVE to tell you about it though! Over my recent weekend trip to Yakima a friend who studied Marine Biology explained to me how Octopuses breed. (not Octopi)

They are known as terminal breeders which means that they mate and then die. The male octopus seeks out the one female he wants to mate with. He basically stalks his 'Jennifer Aniston.' He then 'pokes her with his long, flexible, hectocotylus arm and slips it into her mantle cavity.' So basically he punches her in the face and drops a sperm packet inside her head. He dies afterwards. The female can then decide if she liked that mate or if she wants to wait. Maybe she finds another one that she likes better. Brad Pitt or Bradley Cooper she asks herself? She can discard that sperm packet and get punched in the face again with someone more suitable. Once she is satisfied she then lays thousands of eggs in her den. She doesn't eat for a month and then the eggs hatch. You guess it, she dies. The love story begins again with her offspring.

I know you may think I am a FREAK, but I find this incredibly interesting. Stay tuned for porcupine breeding!

Actually, maybe I am a nerd too, because I think that is kind of interesting too. Like a fun fact of the day!
