Annotated Bibliography

One of my assignments is to read 50+ articles and annotate ones related to my field project.  Over the past few weeks I've learned a vast amount of knowledge about Lemur catta and would now like to share some of that information with you.

First - Here is what a ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) looks like:

Second - Facts about this species:

  • The females dominate the males in both canine size and body mass.
  • They have a very strict breeding period (one day only).
  • The males testicles enlarge 2-3 months prior to the breeding period.
  • They have a toilet claw (used for grooming).
  • They participate in stink fights.
  • They sunbathe.
  • They are cathemeral (active during the day and night).
  • When they eat Leucaena they lose their fur.
  • They become sexually mature at 2.5 years of age.
  • Females lack the brachial organs used for scent production.
  • When they eat tamarind they ruin their teeth and sometimes lose their teeth.
  • They do have a hand preference.
Third - Interesting videos showing how they behave:

ENJOY!
