- 70 - 100 = A [ Distinguished ]
- 60-69 = B [ Merit ]
- 50-59 = C [ Pass ]
- 40-49 = D
- 0 - 39 = F
For assignments that hold a large percent of the overall class grade (usually at least 30%) there is a second marker. This means that the professor grades it and then the assignment is handed over to another professor (in the same field) who then grades it. If the two markers can not agree on the same mark then it is mailed to an external marker (an expert in the field) who then marks it and sends it back. This means we usually do not see our grades/assignments until at least a few weeks after we have submitted them and for larger weighted assignments it could be months. Our dissertation that we submit in September will take about 7 months before we are given our final grade. The nice thing about this is that it is completely fair grading when you have 3 experts marking the assignment. The only thing I have trouble grasping is that 70-100 is an A. When I get an assignment back that states 68% it takes a bit of time for me to realize that it is actually a B. Gets me every time! Also, hardly anyone gets above a 75%. It is basically IMPOSSIBLE to get 80% or higher on any assignment or class :(
