I'm actually a little heart broken.
Throughout the year I have been seeing facebook posts about this chef named Jason Febres in Wichita, KS. I've only heard AMAZING things! Then a friend sent me this petition and I was flabbergasted!
It can't be true. I seriously spent half an hour trying to convince myself that these were just rumors, but sadly they are not. After working in the Sedgwick County Zoo for many years I hold a special place in my heart for African Lions. Captive or not they are quickly becoming extinct due to poachers. There's this demand from a small percent of our human population to eat African Lions or to just shoot an African Lion in the wild to help raise our social status. No I am not associated with PETA and even before taking this Primate Conservation Program I have never understood the need to shoot animals that are quickly disappearing because of our human population encroachment in the first place. As for the comment that I read on this page of the Taste & See website - it's okay because it's a "CAPTIVE" species. Do you know how one obtains a 'captive' species??? They came about because a poacher killed a mother African Lion and then stole the cub and sold it to some rich Westerner who then either started their own zoo or sanctuary or sold it for bush meat. So by taking a 'captive' lion to just 'taste and see' how their exotic meat is you're increasing the demand for more poaching of African Lions.
African Lions are listed as Vulnerable. This is classified higher than the species I studied in Madagascar (Least Concern). This should say something in itself. It is estimated that only ~20,000 wild African Lions exist to this day. Do you know how many that is? Well it's definitely smaller than the number of people that reside in Wichita, KS (~344,000). Think more along the lines of Hays or Derby (~20,000).
Please, if you are planning to attend this event or know someone that is donate that $160 to the Sedgwick County Zoo instead. Help Majola out! Education is the key and many of these people attending this event most likely don't even realize that their grandchildren may never understand that African Lions were once only in the wild.
If you agree with me, please sign this petition to help stop the Lion Tasting dinner in Wichita, KS and feel free to share this information with others.
Love,
Lion Lover
