Quirks of the Locals

Things that I hear every day...

Finger snapping. Finger snapping is HUGE here! They always do it when they are trying to get your attention.

Whistling. They whistle all of the time. Usually to get your attention. Especially when we were in the forest. Each village had a whistle they used to see if the other person was from their village.

Honking. Pedestrians do NOT have the right-of-way. They honk to let you know that they are coming towards you and that you better get out of the way.

So walking along the side walk to go to the market you get finger snapped, whistled, and honked at. Something that I am still not that used to.

As for rules. Oh man. They adhere to every rule and never ask Why. Except if it has to do with getting money (e.g. logging). They never start the car unless your seat belt is on. They always pull over if someone rings them. They really like pictures and movies and laptops and excel spreadsheets with pretty charts so I should be used to this lack of privacy.  Anyways, these people are great, especially if you speak Malagasy. Today I was walking from one of the touristy hotels (because they were the only place that had cheese for pizza) and the ladies swarm towards me asking me to buy things from them. I started speaking Malagasy to them and showed them that I already bought a silver bracelet and they immediately asked me to come into their house for juice and bread. They were so nice! They always give food away to friends and family and their generosity is something that I hope to take back to England and the states.

Tomorrow is Berenty and then Saturday is Tana. I'll be in Oxford by Monday!!!
